The Disney on Keto Series ~ Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar

Disney's Hangar Bar Interior

Disney Springs has a more condensed variety of dining locations than probably any other spot on Walt Disney World. Choosing the first location to continue scouting places and meals that help low carb, sugar free, keto-ers was challenging, so I decided to start with one of the simplest spots: Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar

Unbeknownst to me, this bar with fantastic views on both the inside and outside, only offers appetizers on their menu.  Their focus seems to be craft cocktails combined with visual artifacts everywhere to keep us entertained while we sip our libations. Disney Springs Hangar Bar, Keto at Hangar BarWith somewhat low expectations I reviewed the appetizer menu and was pleasantly surprised! Three of the first four items could all be made keto-friendly and sounded fantastic.
When our server, Robin, took our drink order I specifically asked about Zero carb drink options like Whiteclaw or Truly. She was definitely puzzled by the request and inquired with the bartender. A few minutes later the bar manager, Mary, stopped by to share that while they “unfortunately” didn’t have those options, she would be delighted to help me find an alternative. We discussed the regular options like a flavored vodka with soda but she carried it further by suggesting some modification of the specialty drinks. The Perfectly Poolside would be acceptable if we substituted the simple syrup and tonic with soda water, the same for a Mojito. Last but not least she wanted to make sure I knew their margarita’s are made with fresh squeezed juices, not powdered sour mix.  I didn’t discourage her but keep in mind cointreau and triple sec both have sugars so I wouldn’t have a margarita without knowing it was within my limits for the day. I was thoroughly impressed with Mary’s desire to help find a solution!

On to the good stuff

So, I’m ashamed to say I was SO excited about the food that I forgot to take pictures.  Can you tell I’m new at this blogging about food thing?  I’ll do my best to describe them and hope you’ll forgive me with a promise of doing better next time. (I seriously considered going back out and ordering them all over again just for the pictures.  Because they were really that good!)

The Incan Tuna Tacos – skip the tortillas

These were delicious! Three tacos served with a full lime squeezer to add a nice citrus flavor.  I removed the flour tortillas and plated the tuna seared with mild chili seasoning, guacamole, and lettuce topped with a single slice of fresh jalapeño.  I would order these again in a heartbeat.  The portion was perfect and the tuna was seared medium rare.

Mac’s Pork Belly Sliders – lose the buns, hon

These were the most unique dish of the day.  Most notable was the fact that it wasn’t pulled pork.  They each had a thick slice of crisped pork, topped with red cabbage and swiss cheese.  Fearful of any sugar additives, they were more than happy to put the home-made Russian dressing on the side for me.  My lunch companion said the cabbage tasted like bacon to him and he was clearly a fan.  The pork was just a little bit chewier than I would have liked but the flavors more than made up for it. In lieu of the dressing I asked for yellow mustard on the side (did you know this is great for preventing leg cramps) and thought it was the perfect compliment.

Snakebite Sliders – skip the buns, hon

3 gourmet beef sliders topped with lettuce,  house made pickles and muenster cheese. Delicious! They are normally served with a tomato-bacon jam which we all know must have sugar in it, so quite kindly, they put it on the side with no problems. Again, the portion was perfect, and this so called appetizer was more like a meal.  With a great fresh grilled flavor, I loved these and would order them again without hesitation.

On a 5 star scale of being Keto and low-carb friendly The Hangar Bar gets a solid 3.5 from me.  While nothing was specifically catered to our way of eating, it was one of the easiest menus to modify and make work.  The bartender’s attitude to help us find the perfect cocktail for a hot summer day coupled with the great view and entertaining artifacts makes this an anytime go-to for me as a local.
