Understanding the New DVC Resale Policy Change
On January 7th a new posting appeared on DVCMember.com affecting future resale buyers and sellers. Here’s the copy:
“Update to Disney Vacation Club Resort Access for Contracts Not Purchased Directly from Disney
Effective January 19, 2019, only Members who purchase directly from Disney will be able to use their Vacation Points at the 14 existing Disney Vacation Club Resorts or future Resorts—such as Disney’s Riviera Resort or Reflections – A Disney Lakeside Lodge. Resale contracts purchased for the existing 14 Disney Vacation Club Resorts will only be able to exchange Points into those 14 Resorts.
This change does not apply to contracts purchased prior to January 19, 2019. Contracts gifted to family members will continue to have the same Resort access as before the ownership transfer.
The eligibility rules for Membership Extras and RCI access remain unchanged.
The Buena Vista Trading Company Disclosure Guide has been amended accordingly.”
Our phones have been ringing non-stop and our email box is full from Members asking, “What does this mean!?”
Resale Buyers Can Still Exchange Into the 14 DVC Resorts Built Pre-2019
To be concise, it means that resale buyers will still be able to exchange into all of the existing 14 DVC Resorts, just like they can now. However, it also means they will not be able to exchange into any “future” DVC Resort built from this point on. So if you are an existing Member today – nothing changes. Nothing. The way you use your DVC points stays exactly the same as when you bought them.
If you decide to sell your property in the future, the person who buys it will only be able to exchange into the 14 properties (and RCI) and nothing built in the future. Will this diminish some of the value? Possibly, but not probably. The existing resorts are in the highest demanded locations with each having a fan base of loyal DVC Members not likely to “miss” the ability to get into Riviera.
